Kikio.ng confirmed that his death was linked to cancer, marking the end of a long struggle with the illness.
According to sources close to the family, Dr. Okupe had been critically ill in the weeks leading up to his demise.
His health had reportedly deteriorated significantly, prompting concern among his loved ones and supporters.
It can be recalled that in 2024, Doyin Okupe revealed his battle with cancer for the second time and what led to his weight loss while featuring on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm. He said;
“It’s part in part, the first problem was cancer. Chemotherapy makes you lose appetite, you have nausea, and if that is sustained for several months, you lose weight. When I started chemotherapy, I was 127kg, and then I came down to 97kg…the chemotherapy ended and I went back to 103kg.” Continuing, he revealed how being on a fluid fast contributed. “I wasn’t eating any food at all except carrot juice with some nutrients, plants for 30 days and I lost an additional 10kg. Today I’m between 92 and 93.”
“I love food, I love eating; I eat good food. But now I don’t even care, I don’t eat anything and whenever I do, it’s in moderation; not like before. Now, I don’t crave food. I’m just grateful to God. I see typical benefits and it’s difficult for me to go back to my old ways; my hypertension has gone, diabetes is under very serious control, sleep problems have disappeared,” he explained.
Late Doyin Okupe biography and life history
Late Dr. Doyin Okupe was a Nigerian physician and politician known for his influential role in media and publicity within the country’s political landscape. He worked closely with prominent leaders, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, serving as a key media strategist for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Born in northern Nigeria, Okupe pursued a medical degree at the University of Ibadan. He later established the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos, marking the beginning of a career that bridged both medicine and politics. His political involvement dates back to Nigeria’s Second and Third Republics, though military rule in the 1990s temporarily halted his political ambitions.

In the early 2000s, he was accused of embezzling public funds, with many of these cases resolved through settlements or arbitration. Despite these challenges, he remained a vocal figure in Nigerian politics.

In 2022, Okupe briefly made headlines when he was announced as the vice-presidential candidate for Peter Obi under the Labour Party (LP). However, he was only a placeholder to meet election filing deadlines and was later replaced by a younger candidate with fewer ties to the PDP.
Beyond politics, Okupe remains active on social media, particularly Twitter, where he has amassed over 430,000 followers, using the platform to share his political views and insights.
