How many senior advocates are there in Nigeria?

According to the complete list of SAN’s from 1975-2024, there are currently 790 Senior Advocates in Nigeria. As we earlier stated, this list and figure were updated on the 6th of January 2024, which makes it the most updated on the internet today.

You can trust our data as they have been verified, and any name not on this list has not been conferred as SAN.

Who was the first Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN)?

The title was first conferred on April 3, 1975. The recipients were Chief F.R.A. Williams and Dr Nabo Graham-Douglas. As of July 7, 2011 344 lawyers had become Senior Advocates of Nigeria. Chief (Mrs.) Folake Solanke is the first female recipient of the rank of SAN 6 years after in 1981.

Since 1975, a varying number of advocates in Nigeria have consecutively been conferred with the rank, with the exception of years- 1976, 1977 and 1994. The conferment is however restricted to fewer than 30 advocates per annum and is made by the Chief Justice of Nigeria on the recommendations of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee.

What is a Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN)?

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a title that may be conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria of not less than ten years standing and who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession.

The conferment of the title is made in accordance with the Legal Practitioners Act 207 Section 5 by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, headed by the Chief Justice (as Chairman), and consist of the Attorney-General, one Justice of the Supreme Court, the President of the Court of Appeal, five of the Chief Judges of the States, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and five legal practitioners who are Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

How to become a SAN in Nigeria – Requirements for Senior Advocate of Nigeria

SAN is an honorary rank/title that is conferred on deserving and distinguished legal practitioners in Nigeria. The title was first conferred on April 3, 1975, on chief F.R.A Williams and Dr. Nabo Graham-DOUGLAS. It is equivalent to the rank of Queens’s counsel in the United Kingdom and tends to admit members into the inner bar as opposed to the usual outer bar where other legal practitioners stay in court.

This title comes with respect and lots of prestige, which makes a lot wonder what it actually takes to be conferred with such a title.

I must tell you, the rules are strict, and they are made so as to preserve prestige on the title.

Checkout some of the requirements to attain the SAN title;

• Applicants must be a citizen of Nigeria.
• He must have practiced as a lawyer for at least a period of 10years
• The applicant must be of good/impeccable character and integrity.
• An applicant must register for the award with a non-refundable fee of 300 000 naira.
• The applicant must submit to the legal practitioners’ privileges committee a list of 10 judges of the superior courts of record before whom he had appeared and argued important cases. The legal practitioners’ privileges committee will select any 3 of those judges to give testimonial statements about him.
• He must also submit a list of colleagues with whom he has handled cases, 3 of whom will be selected to give testimonial statements.
• An applicant must have had at least 8 judgments of the high court, 6 judgments of the court of appeal, and 3 judgments of the Supreme Court. But where he appeared only before the Supreme Court, he will be required to submit 6 judgments of the Supreme Court.
• He must show evidence that he has been paying his practicing fee and membership dues to his local branch of the Nigerian Bar Association for at least a period of 10 consecutive years preceding the year of applying for the award.
• He must also show evidence of the payment of income tax for at least 3years preceding his application.
• The legal practitioners’ privileges committee has a duty to inspect the applicants firm in order to assess the size and quality of his library, the numbers and competence of his staff.
• Applicants must show evidence of where he rendered pro bono cases as a form of community service.
• If the applicant is an academic in law, he/she must submit at least 20 copies of outstanding legal works which are published to the committee.
• The academic must show that his work was published by a reputable and a recognized publisher whose reputation shall be checked by the academic sub-committee of the legal practitioners’ privileges committee.

Section 5(1) of the Act states that for a member of the legal profession to get the privilege award of the rank of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), he must have achieved the following;

• The applicant must be in full-time legal practice.
• He must have distinguished themselves as an advocate.
• Must have made a significant contribution to the development of the legal profession in Nigeria.
• The rank can also in some exceptional cases be awarded to members of the legal profession who have distinguished themselves as academics by making substantial contributions to the practice of law, through teaching, research, and publications that have become a major source of reference by legal practitioners, judges, law teachers, and law students.

New SAN list 2021 – 72 sworn in as Senior Advocates of Nigeria

Here is the list of lawyers who were most recently conferred with the SAN title.

While administering the oath of office to the new SANs, the CJN admonished them to forge ahead with the right mindset and disposition to attain more impactful results.

He said the Supreme Court; and by extension, the Nigerian Judiciary, has fared well in the outgone legal year even though the horizon was literally roughened by overwhelming challenges.

He said “As this new legal year unfolds, we will like to assure you that we are determined to work assiduously to evolve a judiciary that will remarkably be the pride of Nigerians, home and abroad.

The CJN said, “I must say with pride and exhilaration that during the outgone year, we experienced so many positive heartwarming in the Nigerian judiciary. For the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, we swore in eight honourable justices to fill the positions vacated by our esteemed colleagues who retired as well as enlarging the profile of our judicial strength by increasing the number of justices to an all-time high number of 20. That indeed was first of its kind in our history.”

Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, while speaking at the ceremony said the judiciary has continued to complement other arms of government despite the challenges by COVID-19, insecurity and dwindling economy, saying the judiciary has helped in the preservation of the country’s hard-earned democracy.

Mr Malami said, “I want to state categorically that the LPPC has done a good job by putting forward deserving and qualifying lawyers, saying they must ensure that due process is followed in subsequent selection.”

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad, December 2020 swore in 72 legal practitioners who were recently elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Mr Muhammad was represented at the ceremony by Olabode Rhodes-Vivour, the most senior justice of the Supreme Court, who administered the oaths, and also warned them against disobeying court rules.

The rank was awarded to senior lawyers who have demonstrated great excellence and have proved themselves as advocates and academics.
