The Ekiti State Police Command has reacted officially to a viral video that sparked widespread reactions online after a police officer was seen behaving erratically in public.
The disturbing footage, which circulated heavily across social media platforms, allegedly showed the officer acting under the influence of a psychoactive substance popularly known as “Colorado.” The incident was said to have occurred in Asin Ekiti, located in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
In the now-viral clip, the uniformed officer was seen embracing and holding onto a bench while displaying unusual behaviour that attracted residents and passers-by at the scene. Many eyewitnesses claimed the officer appeared unstable and possibly intoxicated, leading to public outrage and concern.
Following the backlash generated by the video, the Ekiti State Police Command confirmed that the officer has been identified, arrested, and taken into custody.
According to an official press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, the affected officer is a Police Sergeant serving at the Ikole-Ekiti Division Police Headquarters.
The statement revealed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, has ordered that the officer undergo psychological and medical evaluation ahead of disciplinary proceedings.
The command stated:
“The Ekiti State Police Command has noticed a disturbing video circulating on social media where an officer in camouflage uniform was seen behaving erratically, suspected to be under the influence of an illicit drug.”
The police further disclosed that the officer is currently in custody and has now regained stability.
Authorities also stressed that the conduct displayed in the video does not represent the standard and discipline of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Commissioner of Police wishes to unequivocally state that the behaviour portrayed by the Policeman in the video does not depict the standard discipline of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement added.
The command assured residents of its commitment to maintaining professionalism, protecting lives and property, and ensuring proper conduct among officers across the state.
The incident has continued to generate mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians calling for stricter monitoring of officers’ mental health, drug abuse awareness, and accountability within security agencies.
Others also commended the swift response of the Ekiti State Police Command in addressing the matter publicly and taking disciplinary steps against the officer.
