LIST OF TABOOS IN SOME EKITI TOWNS & VILLAGES

These taboos are a few among the others largely known in Ekiti state.

1. It is a taboo to hawk brooms in the front of the palace in Ado-Ekiti.

2. In Aramoko and Ikere, for example, roasting of yam for sale is an abomination.

3. Horses are forbidden in Ado-Ekiti.

4. In Otun-Ekiti, the king is not allowed to set his eyes on his parents once he is crowned in the town.

5. It is also forbidden to sleep on the reverse of a mat.

6. In Aramoko and Ikere, you do not parade the streets with a bunch of plantain; rather, it should be separated into single pieces.

7. You also cannot eat new yam in the market except the king has eaten it. You may eat it at home but not in the open.

8. A woman must never see or come in physical contact with Oro, one of the masquerades.

9. A man must never have sexual relations with another man’s wife.

10. It is prohibited for anyone to sit a child on his/her shoulders while walking in the front of the king’s palace in Ado-Ekiti.

11. In Ikere, an animal freshly killed should not be carried exposed; rather, it must be covered.

12. Never turn the head of a broom upside down.

13. When fetching water from the well at night, do not shine a torch into it.
